Year 4 Overview
Welcome to Year 4!
In Year 4, our three classes are called Edinburgh, St Davids and York which are all named after British cities. Throughout the year, much of the work is related to our two
Mantle of the Expert topics. ‘The Bakery’ has a history focus during which the children learn about where the Anglo Saxons came from and how they settled in Britain. The
topic gives the children opportunities to immerse themselves in the daily life of Anglo Saxons. They learn how to dye cloth in natural colourings, weave using card looms
and how to make bread.
The ‘Travel Agents’ has a geography focus when the children learn about Crete, including mountain ranges and weather patterns. The children debate the pros and cons of
developing an uninhabited island and design their own tourist attraction using maps and plans.
After Christmas, the children start swimming lessons at White Oak Leisure Centre to develop their swimming techniques and stamina.
Mrs Lawton introduces the ukulele in September and the children are given opportunities to compose and perform during lessons. ‘Jake’ from Music Digital always thinks
the children are ‘fab’ ukulele players!
One of the highlights of Year 4 is the Christmas production! The children audition for singing, dancing and acting parts and in 2017, they performed ‘Dick Whittington.’
And of course, the children have lots to learn in English and maths lessons. During these, lessons reinforce knowledge and skills gained in Y3 and build on this understanding.
