Welcome to Year 5.
In year 5 we cover a wide variety of text types ranging from: older literature to narratives from other cultures, traditional and modern poetry. We incorporate many different types of media such as news footage, films, drama, picture books and whole texts. We try to ensure that the weekly spellings that are sent home on a termly basis are linked to our learning in class to help and support all areas of the English curriculum. We enjoy taking part in team based spelling and punctuation games so that the children can also learn through play and interaction. Children are expected to write in pen using cursive joined writing which is encouraged when practising our handwriting.
Guided Reading takes place as a carousel activity. The use of the carousel provides all teachers with the opportunity to hear all children read whilst the other groups are focused on pre-reading, follow up activities, hand writing and non-fiction research.
In Math’s we build on prior knowledge of the four operations and ensure that these are deeply embedded in the children’s understanding. We then use these skills to answer problem solving and reasoning questions. Further focus is placed on shape and space, measure and data analysis. Lessons consist of elements of real life activities to secure the children’s understanding and their relevance.
Through the Mantle of the Expert, we travel back in time to the Ancient Egyptians, covering history based learning objectives. Africa is our geographical focus with the Zambezi providing useful facts and information to support our learning.
