Message for Year 6 and Vulnerable and Key Worker Children:

Friday 22nd May 2020

Dear Mums, Dads and Carers

Re: School Reopening to Year 6 and Vulnerable and Key Worker Children on 1st June 2020

Thank you for informing us of your intention to send your child back into school from Monday 1st June.  This is obviously a very difficult time and we are putting together plans and risk assessments, in line with Government guidelines, copies of which will be forwarded to you next week.  Your children’s safety, as well as their wellbeing, remains our priority.  Should your child or any family member develop any listed signs/symptoms for Covid-19, you must adhere to self isolation recommendations to protect our school family.  Please inform us immediately so that we are able to respond appropriately.

We have allocated a separate teaching area for each group which will be made up of 10 children and 2 members of staff.  Each hub will be given their own pickup and drop off time.  Whilst in class, your child/ren will remain in their hub which will include the classroom, toilets and designated play area creating a ‘bubble’ effect and minimising cross contamination between groups wherever possible.  This will include having lunch in their hub in their designated classroom and playing outside at designated times.  Throughout the day, pupils will be asked to wash their hands at least every 2 hours for 20 seconds and will have access to hand sanitiser in the classroom too.

Unfortunately, for Year 6, I am unable to advise of the children who are going to be in attendance on 1st June.  We are very aware that on their return Year 6 will want to be with their friends.  Could I please ask all of the Year 6 parents who have said yes to their child returning on June 1st to email me at or call me on 01322 522 151 before Wednesday 27th May, with two other children’s names that you would like your child to be with if they are also returning.  With teachers, parents and children’s input we will endeavour to place your child in the right ‘bubble’ for them.  We will not be able to move the children around once these ‘bubbles’ have been created.  We will advise you next week the class your child will be in and your drop off and pick up time.

Government guidance, which has advised schools to avoid using PPE unless looking after a child with symptoms or giving first aid, will however be worn by our cleaning team.  They will also be following strict guidelines and use disposable equipment wherever possible to clean and disinfect all used areas.  Identified hotspots, i.e. door handles will also be cleaned throughout the day.

We will also ensure that hubs have good ventilation, with doors and windows open where possible and as much outdoor learning as possible will take place.  All children will be allocated a desk in their classroom that they will sit at each day and will be given their own individual pack of stationery and exercise books.  They will not have to share any resources.

The children will be asked to come into school each day in their school uniform.  On the day that your child is timetabled for PE, they will be asked to attend school in their PE kit.  As we approach the hot weather, please apply sun cream to your child before they come to school and provide a sunhat as we plan to be using the outside learning environment more frequently than usual.

The children do not require any bag or equipment.  We are unable to provide a school lunch at this time and every child should bring a packed lunch and 2 x water bottles as the water fountains will be switched off.   These will remain on the children’s allocated desks during the day and must be taken home every day for cleaning purposes.

Specific entry arrangements will be key worker and vulnerable children to enter through the Wood Close gates and Year 6 to enter through Birchwood Drive.  The gates will be signposted clearly so please adhere to these requests.

When bringing your child/ren to school, we will expect you to comply with the two metre rule and respect the social distancing measures.  Markers are in place on the ground at both entrances to ensure that the 2 metre rule is followed.  We would also ask that only one parent/carer attends the school at any one time.

A member of our SLT will be at each entrance gate and the children will be sent directly into their classes to avoid any parent waiting unnecessarily.  Parents will be expected to leave the premises promptly at all times. If you need to speak to a member of staff, please use the school email or telephone the office.  Unfortunately, at this time, no parent/carer will be permitted in the building.

We have arranged for the following groups to be dropped off/collected at the following times:

Children - Year 6                                              Arrive                      Collect

Year 6 Group 1 = Swansea Classroom         8.30 am                  2:30 pm

Year 6 Group 2 = Portsmouth Classroom    8:45 am                  2:45 pm

Year 6 Group 3 = Newport Classroom          9:00 am                  3:00 pm

Year 6 Group 4 = Derry Classroom                9:15 am                  3:15 pm

Year 6 Group 5 = Dundee Classroom            9:30 am                  3:30 pm

Children of Key Workers/Vulnerable          Arrive                          Collect

Year 3 = Aberdeen Classroom                       8.30 – 9.15am         2.30 – 3.15 pm

Year 4 = Belfast Classroom                            8.30 – 9.15am        2.30 – 3.15 pm

Year 5 = Cambridge Classroom                     8.30 – 9.15am        2.30 – 3.15 pm

This is an unprecedented time and we are working hard to make a difficult time run as smoothly as possible.  We value and appreciate your support with implementing the above procedures.

As the time of writing this we are planning for 1st June but as you are aware this could change and obviously we would then be in contact again.

Take care

Mrs Watson

Dear Mums, Dads and Carers

I know that many questions have been raised since the announcement from the Government about schools reopening.

As you are aware we are in the process of planning for the return of our Year 6 on 1st June.  At this point it needs to be made clear that we are only being asked to plan for this return and that the Government will look at the science and data before they make their final decision.  I have spoken to all of those parents in Year 6 personally who have questions that they wanted to be answered about this return.  This is still in the planning as new guidelines are constantly being received - having been emailed a 138 page document from KCC this morning.  I have a lot of reading to do!!!

I write to you today to further clarify some additional points.  We have no idea of what we will be asked to do over the next few weeks from the Government.  We are unaware of which year groups will be asked to come back, when and how we will be asked to organise these phased returns. What I do know is you will be updated when we are given this information.

However, what I can guarantee is that we will follow the directive from the Government at all times.   Unfortunately, like every school at this time I am unable to speculate on what this will be and would rather wait to give concrete plans once I have all of the information that is required.

A few weeks ago, I did say that the children would return in their classes with their current teachers if we were coming back in this academic year as a full school.  However, this is probably unlikely due to the nature of how the school is now being organised using the guidelines that have been provided for the return of Year 6 (ie. pupils to be in groups of 10 or less).  We do hope that this will not be the case from September and that we can open as a full school with all pupils attending in the new academic year so this is how the classes will be organised if we are open fully. Please do not ask for your child to be moved class as there will be no changes to any class. However, I do have to stress that at this stage, we are unaware of what the actual arrangements will be in September.

Urgent message to Year 6 Parents and Carers:

As you are aware the survey for Year 6 closed at midday on Friday 15th May 2020.

We are using the data collected to plan the proposed opening of school on June 1st.  Please be aware that if you did not respond to this survey, we are assuming that you are NOT returning your child to school and we will be planning our opening with the number of children that have been confirmed. If this is not the case you should contact the school office urgently.

Please call us immediately on 01322 522 151 before we proceed further with any plans by no later than 4pm today.

Many thanks.

Mrs Watson

Monday 18th May 2020

To all Year Groups:

Dear Mums, Dads & Carers

By now, you will be aware of the government’s intentions that after half term that school is expected to be open from 1st June for Year 6.

At the moment, we are following the government’s decision for Year 6 to be the first year group to return to our school. We are looking forward to seeing our older children, but are upset that we cannot have the whole school back yet. Hopefully we will not have to wait too much longer for that day!

Meanwhile, please continue to send in your child’s learning into your teachers via the class emails. We will continue to update the learning on the website, so make sure you are looking at this every day. Along with all of this we are working very hard at school to ensure that when the children do return, the school and classrooms are all ready for this.

If you would like to receive personal phone calls from your class teachers, please can you email them your number and they will call you directly.  The number calling you back will display No Caller ID.  By you giving us your phone number means that you are giving consent for this number to be used.

Please note that school will be closed for ALL children including key worker and vulnerable over half term.

Please stay safe and take care.

Mrs Watson

Updated Friday 15th May 2020

Key Worker and Year 6 Parents Only.

Please can Year 6 and Key Worker Parents complete the surveys below by midday today.  It is essential the school has finalised numbers.
If you choose to send your child in, we will endeavour to make it as normal as possible but the reality is we cannot make a very difficult environment with so many measures in place 'normal'.
Things we cannot promise:
- social distancing
- children not mixing in close proximity
- the new environment won't be unsettling for our children
Organisation of Classes
The children will be allocated a class with up to 9 other children.  They will only be able to socialise with this class and member of staff when they are in school.  They will be unable to interact with other children who are not in this class.  Break time and lunch times will be staggered and the outside areas will most probably be split into zones.
A video will be released to you on Friday 22nd May to show you how the school will be organised as of 1st June.
There is a chance that they might see a member of staff wearing a mask and gloves eg First Aid
Things that will not be allowed:
-parents near classrooms
-parents in the school building
(Our model will include you dropping them at the external school gate to minimise the risk of  infection/mixing to others and our team)
Please do not feel pressured or guilty for the decisions you choose to make. This is a very difficult time and you should all make a choice based on your 'gut feeling' as a parent, not because there is pressure on media platforms for children to attend.
Your children's and our staff's wellbeing is paramount. Our team will continue to support you all during this difficult time.

Dear Mums, Dads and Carers

If you are a key worker and you would like your child to attend school from 1st June,  please could you complete the following survey by midday tomorrow.  You do not have to complete this survey if your child is in Year 6.

Please complete this survey before 12pm Friday 15th May: Click Here

I am sorry to ask for such a short turnaround.

Thank you so much.

Year 6 Parents Only.

Dear Mums, Dads and Carers

Thank you for all of your support and understanding through this very difficult time. We fully appreciate the anxiety and strain that you as parents are under and hope that this information will give you some provisional idea of what schooling may be like from 1st June.

In the guidance, “Implementing Protective Measures in Education and Childcare Settings” it states:

  • avoid contact with anyone with symptoms
  • frequent hand cleaning
  • good respiratory hygiene practices
  • regular cleaning of setting
  • minimize contact and mixing

Dependent on Government announcements, this means that from 1st June our school will be open to Year 6 children and those of Key Workers.

Our proposed approach is to make sure that your children are as safe as possible.  We are proposing the following structure - we will have to significantly reduce the number of children in each class.   Year 6 will be in a maximum class size of 10 and will remain with the same members of staff each day.  The children will remain in these classes for the day and will socialise with the children in this class at both playtime and lunchtime.

We will share all of our risk assessments, plans and procedures before the school opens but please can we have your initial thoughts so we gauge the number of Year 6 children who will be in school as of 1st June.  I apologise for the quick turnaround but please could this be completed by midday tomorrow.

Thank you so much.

Updated Wednesday 13th May 2020

Dear Mums, Dads and Carers

Your continued support is appreciated from all of us at JWJS.  We want to support you as much as possible and update with up to date information as we receive it.   To date, we have been informed that Year 6 should be returning to school on 1st June.  We will send further details to our Year 6 parents separately on the strategies we are adopting for this re-opening.

The DfE have also stated that 'our ambition is to bring all primary year groups back to school before the summer holidays, for a month if feasible, this will be kept under review.  We will review this advice on class sizes as and when science indicates it is safe to invite more children back to childcare settings, schools and colleges.'  We will update about this proposal when we hear more from the DfE.

These proposals do indicate that there will still be a number of weeks when children will be distant learning at home.  Please can I ask you to take a few moments to answer the following survey so as to inform us on how to proceed forward with the home learning that is being provided.

To complete our survey Click Here.  This survey will close by 2pm tomorrow Thursday 14th May.

Thank you again for all your support.  It has been wonderful to speak to some of you this week.  We are continuing to ring our families on a daily basis.

Take care and keep safe.  We are missing you so much.

Mrs Watson

Updated Monday 11th May 2020

Dear Mums, Dads and Carers

Following the Prime Minister's speech last night, we are expecting to have more clarity on the opening of schools from 2pm today.  We have had exactly the same information as yourselves.  I have spoken to the DfE and KCC today who also are awaiting further information.

We believe that it may be confirmed that year 6 are to return to school. However, as of yet no date has been announced.

As soon as we are aware of what is expected, we will ensure that you are the first to be included in our plans for reopening.

We are missing you dreadfully and will be calling every one of our families during this week.

Kind regards

Mrs Watson

Letter to Parents - 4th May 2020pdf.pdf

Monday 4th May 2020

Dear Mums, Dads and Carers

We are missing you all greatly and do hope that your children are enjoying the daily uploads and the work that the teaching staff are creating on the website. I would like to say thank you for all the wonderful work that has been received from your children and your kind messages of support.

Distance Learning
Just to confirm, our suggested learning activities are our weekly learning grids that are bespoke to JWJS, the weekly reading challenges that have been created by Mrs Sutherland, spellings, homework and the daily maths lessons. As of today, White Rose have joined with BBC Bitesize and we have added this link for each year group. All these resources can be found on the website by following the links below.

We have had a few calls from parents who are worried that they are not doing enough with their children at home. Please refer to the letter sent on 25th March for guidance and advice on this.

We have been investigating ways in which we can increase the interaction between home and teachers. Please remember the school office is being manned so if you do need to contact us please do so via email on or phone on 01322 522151. There will always be someone to talk to from 8.30am – 4.00pm. Alternatively, you can contact Mrs Gilham with any concerns or worries via email at or phone her on 07714248635. Please do call us, we want to hear from you and we want to help.

As of today, we would like you to be able to contact teachers directly and I have listed the emails below of each class so that you can upload your children’s work to your class teacher, ask any queries about work that has been set or how you can assist your child in their learning. Teachers have been asked to respond to emails during the school day and give feedback on work that has been sent in. However, there are some teachers who will be in school with our key worker and vulnerable children so they will not be in a position to respond on the days that they are in school. You will get an automatic reply advising you if this is the case.

In line with other Kent schools, we have no plans to provide our own live, video-streamed lessons or consultations. We will continue to use Teachers2Parents, emails, daily updates, phone and our website as our communication methods.

Classes for Next Year
At this stage we are unaware of when we may return. We do hope that this will be in this academic year so the children can return to their classes they were in when the school was closed.

We are missing you all greatly and are looking forward to hearing when we can all be together again. Do take care and please do keep in touch.

Mrs Watson
